Good things ahead, despite loss

Asseco Prokom Gdynia was handed a defeat by Unicaja Malaga, 63:82 in their anniversary Euroleague match. The game was tied 39:39 at halftime. Polish Champs lost focus in the second and Spaniards outscored them 43:24. Freeland Joel led the winners with 17 points.

First quarter was a period of visitor’s big men good performance. Robert Archibald and Joel Freeland combined for 17 of 20 Unicaja points. Hosts could not find the way to stop Malaga from scoring points from the paint. However they won the first quarter by 21:20.

Ratko Varda tallied 6 points in the quarter after his own offensive boards, Jagla added to consecutive treys. Paced by Omar Cook guests build up 39:33 lead midway through the period. Asseco went on a 6:0 run to close the quarter and left the game tied at 39 at halftime.

After the break, visitors regained the lead on excellent three-point execution. Unicaja topped Asseco 23:16 in the third quarter and took 62:55 advantage going into the last ten minutes of the match.

Malaga players controlled the game in the final quarter. Jimenez trey gave them double digit lead. Spaniards scored four consecutive points on Ronnie’s technical foul. Burrell’s buzzer beater trey trimmed Unicaja lead down to 19 points.
