Race for the top spot is still on

Tuesday, 10 April 2012 11:45 | Przemysław Szulc
Asseco Prokom Gdynia - PLKThere are two games left to the end of TBL second phase of regular season. On Wednesday Asseco Prokom hosts last year vice-Champions, PGE Turow Zgorzelec and on Saturday they play Trefl Sopot in Sopot. One win in these games secures Asseco Prokom second spot, two wins will give them home-court advantage throughout playoffs. Second spot means meeting Slask Wroclaw in the first round, first – Andrzej Urlep’s AZS Koszalin.

If Asseco Prokom fails to beat PGE Turow, no matter what will happen in Saturday’s prestigious showdown, Trefl will finish on top. But for Polish Champions situation might get very complicated as losses in two remaining games might bring them down to sixth.

It will be Zgorzelec first visit to Gdynia this season. Teams have met twice already and split the games. On February 12th ,in Polish Cup, Zgorzelec won 85:70 against Motiejunas-and-Blassingame-less Prokom. Przemek Zamojski, who will not play tomorrow because of broken wrist, had 18 points, Dmitriev and Hrycaniuk added 12 points apiece. Asseco Prokom avenged that loss with a 93:63 rout in Zgorzelec on March 18th. Reigning Champs led wire to wire and didn’t give PGE any chances. Five players scored in double figures: Motiejunas 19, Zamojski 17, Frasunkiewicz 12, Blassingame 10 and 7 dimes and Hrycaniuk chipped in with double-double 16 points and 10 boards.

Couple days after that meeting club parted ways with former Atlanta and Indiana C, John Edwards. Damian Kulig from Basket Poznan was signed in his place. PGE also added Arthur Lee on playmaker, who has recently played in Lebanon (as Quinton Day).

In the event of Zamojski’s injury other players need to fill the void after guard who became one of the go to guys in offense. Day, Seweryn, Kuebler or young Ponitka need to step up and get ready for hard play-off battles.

Jacek Winnicki backcourt is composed of: American Lee (34/185), speedy Ronald Moore (23/183), combo-guard Lithuanian Giedrius Gustas (32/190), Michal Chylinski and if necessary also David Jackson (26/193) or Michal Jankowski (24/192). Forwards include leader Daniel Kickert (28/208) who can shoot from anywhere on the floor. Aaron Cel (25/200), moral leader – Konrad Wysocki (30/200) and quickly improving Michal Gabinski (25/202). In the reserves there is also experienced Artur Mielcarek (28/195). Vis a vis in Prokom are: Frasunkiewicz, Szczotka, Dmitriev, Witka and of course Motiejunas.

In the front court we will see dunk and blocks master, Dallas Lasuderdale (23/203) and above mentioned (24/205). They will be challenged by Hrycaniuk and Lapeta duo.

PGE Turow Zgorzelec is on the fifth place in the table. Despite finishing the first phase of the season on second place with 17:7 record. They are struggling hugely in the second phase. PGE won only two of eight games. Zgorzelec still have got a chance for home court advantage in the first round though. So tomorrow at 18:00CET we will surely see an interesting game.
